Breath IN through your nose, OUT through your mouth. This will help you to control your respiration, which will lead to controlling your heart rate somewhat. Also, when you are breathign, concentrate on “stomach” breathing. It may sound a little strange, but if you thing about it, it is more physiologically correct. Watch a baby breath when it is sleeping. You will notice that the baby’s STOMACH rises significantly more than it’s chest does with each breath. When you first start, you will have to make a conscious effort to extend your stomach outwards. This will give your diaphram more room to extend into the stomach cavity and draw MORE air DEEPER into your lungs. It is a bit difficult at first, but once you get the hang of it, it will become more natural. You’ll have more oxygen being fed to your body during workouts, which will make your workouts more effective.
Good luck!!

As an X-smoker myself I can’t implore you enough to never go back to smoking. It gets harder and harder to quit the more years that go by.
Try Chi breathing. This is slow deep breathing. Often we breath too shallow while working out, only using the upper one third of our lung capacity. This is a breathing skill that needs to be practiced. When we were borne we had this skill naturally and as we grew up some how we loose it. It can be regained with practice. I start ever morning with a minuet or three of deep breathing exercise just sitting relaxed on the edge of my bed. I could go on about the benefits of breathing but I don’t have the time right now. While working out try not to pant and remember to breath slower and deeper. By doing this you can sometimes do the impossible and recover lost lung capacity. I know of several people who have including myself. I have the lung capacity charts to prove it.
